This painting by Martin Johnson Heade stands out because of what it reflects about the time: an artist contributed to the scientific canon because he was a “romantic masquerading as a realist.” It’s the same idea mentioned in the Neri Oxman episode of Abstract. Today an artist would not have the credibility to do such a thing.
