Weekly Roundup / Jun 25, 2021

The weekly roundup is my offering of inspiring things I found online in the past week. May they bring you some pearl of wisdom, joy, or humor.

Article – Five Pioneering Black Ballerinas: ‘We Have to Have a Voice’
An important story in the history of ballet about the founding dancers of Harlem Dance Theatre. This quote from a 1979 performance review says it all about their excellence: a “purer realization of the Balanchinean ideal than anyone else’s.”

Video – Hummingbird and Passionflowers painting analysis
This painting by Martin Johnson Heade stands out because of what it reflects about the time: an artist contributed to the scientific canon because he was a “romantic masquerading as a realist.” It’s the same idea mentioned in the Neri Oxman episode of Abstract. Today an artist would not have the credibility to do such a thing.

It’s the first weekend of summer! How will you carry creativity into the new season?

Have a fabulous weekend,
Allegra
